two smiling childrenAny time is a good time to talk about children’s dental health. After all, we love to see the bright, infectious, and healthy smiles of little ones. But February is an especially appropriate time to discuss caring for those young teeth because it is National Children’s Dental Health Month. Let’s take a moment to focus on this annual observance and the ways in which you and your dentist in Boonville can support it.

Children’s Dental Health Month

For decades now, every February has been the time for the American Dental Association (ADA) to sponsor campaigns to raise awareness of how important it is that kids have good oral health. This year, the theme of the month is “Defeat Monster Mouth,” and related posters show fun characters as they Plaquster the Monster.

Of course, children’s dental health is about more than preventing cavities. A mouth that is free of cavities, childhood gum disease, and tooth development problems prevents a child’s suffering and promotes their overall health and well-being.

How You Can Get Into the Spirit of Children’s Dental Health Month

How are your kids doing at mastering good habits like brushing and flossing? If they’re struggling a bit, now is a great time to step up your efforts to teach them. You can get them a fun toothbrush and take a few minutes to show them how to brush all the surfaces of their teeth. Maybe you can eve brush your teeth together for a little fun and foamy family time!

You might also find some age-appropriate materials online that show some of the scary consequences that occur when someone neglects good oral hygiene habits.

Your Children’s Dentist in Boonville Wants to Help, Too

If it has been more than six months since your child’s last dental appointment, why not schedule a time for your little one to see their children’s dentist in Boonville? That way, Dr. Kelly can identify any potential issues with your child’s oral health before they become major problems. The doctor might also recommend that your child receive sealants on their molars, which will place a protective barrier between their teeth and the acids and food particles that might otherwise do them harm.

Dr. Kelly is interested in your child’s overall health and well-being as well. That’s why he wants to make sure every child is comfortable in our office and has an opportunity to get used to the environment before anyone sticks a tool in their mouth. During the exam, Dr. Kelly will check for signs of such things as developmental problems with the teeth, and signs of cavities and gum disease.

He’ll also let you know about anything in the child’s mouth that indicates overall emotional or health issues. For example, teeth that have been damaged by grinding are sometimes a sign that a child is under a lot of stress.

February is National Children’s Dental Health Month. Let’s do what we can to support this important observance.
