If a cavity remains untreated, and plaque and\ntartar continue to attack the tooth, the damage may reach the point where major\ndental treatment, such as a crown or root canal therapy, is necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gum Disease<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

When plaque and tartar accumulate in the area along the gum\nline, it sparks an immune response in the body. The immune response causes the\ngum tissue to become inflamed. This type of inflammation is known as\ngingivitis, the first stage of gum disease. Left untreated, gingivitis is\nlikely to develop into periodontitis, the advanced form of gum disease. Periodontitis\nis a major contributing factor in tooth loss. It has also been associated with\na number of overall health problems, including premature birth, heart disease,\nand dementia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The best way to combat plaque buildup can be summed up in\ntwo words: oral hygiene. Fluoridated toothpaste even helps to remineralize enamel that has been\nweakened by acid attacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
